Belleville Washers are a frusto-conical shape which gives a spring characteristic's.  As the joint is tightened the washer becomes flat and actually reduces the applied load in the bolt assembly.  So if the bolted joint is loosened, the load will increase from the Belleville Washer counteracting the loosening of the joint.
